The A7R – Sony’s 36.3 MP Full-Frame Digital Camera

The A7R – Sony’s 36.3 MP Full-Frame Digital Camera

Rumors have been flying around the internet “buzz” sites for several months about Sony being in development on the A7R, a full frame interchangeable lens NEX size camera body.  The rumors, as is often the case, were wrong.  Sony was in development on two bodies, not just one.  While many anticipated a full frame sensor based Nex, nobody I read anticipated Sony cramming their 36MP D800E sensor technology inside what basically appears to me as a reworked RX1 body, with viewfinder included.

A Full Lineup Of New Lenses Is Also Planned

The A7 and A7R are close in terms of design, both inside and out, the basic differences being their sensors, model unique autofocus systems, and body construction materials. The A7 is constructed of a plastic, while the A7R is full magnesium construction for professional field use.  The A7 sports a full-frame 24 megapixel CMOS sensor, while the A7R has a whopping 36 megapixel CMOS sensor without a low-pass filter. The A7 uses an on-chip hybrid phase detection AF system right out of the larger full frame brother, the Sony SLT-A99.  Big megapixel A7R version has Sony’s traditional contrast detection system.

Both The Sony A7 & A7R Feature A Tilting Rear Screen

A whole new Sony Bionz X processor is featured in both the A7 and A7R cameras as are XGA (1024 x 768 pixel) E-Finders, Wi-Fi built right in, a tilting rear LCD, and as an extra nice touch for those of us who frequently find ourselves outdoors, weatherproof bodies.  That is a whole lot of goodness packed into both very small packages!
