LET US ROAM: Ray Barbee

LET US ROAM – Ray Barbee from Let Us Roam on Vimeo.

Ray Barbee is a legendary professional skateboarder from San Jose, California, who now resides with his wife and two children in Long Beach, California.   He made his first appearance in the skate film “Public Domain.”  First available in 1988, Public Domain rocked the skate scene and raised the bar with its 60 minuets of tricks, crashes, interviews, and randomness.  Frankly, I didn’t particularly care for the production values of “Public Domain” though the subject matter interested me greatly.  That is not the case with Ray Barbee’s latest skateboard movie effort produced by Bozeman, Montana based http://www.heliocollective.com.

From their website, “Helio Collective is a multi-disciplinary creative production company focused on producing content with rich stories. We combine our disciplines of live action, design, editing, animation, and cinematography to create engaging experiences for broadcast, web and film. Simply stated, we are artists with a passion for storytelling and a goal of creating inspiring authentic media.”  They go on to say “We believe that every brand has a story to be told and that story provides the foundation and inspiration for communicating a brand’s message. Our process starts with defining the client’s concept and creating a story that engages our audience. Our writers and creatives collaborate to craft communication with imagination and passion. We ultimately aim to create experiences that will move audiences and connect them to the brand.”

In this case the Brand in focus is Leica.  Say what you will about the cost of getting into the game, but the one thing you can always count on with Leica is good, solid, well engineered products with amazing lenses, and a Brand image that is top notch, first class across the board.  With Leica, it is a matter not just of the excellence of the camera bodies and lenses, it is also very much about the users experiences with it.  I say this as a long time Leica user myself who has enjoyed both the experiences and still continue to enjoy the products I have owned for many, many years just as much as I enjoy Leica’s latest ones.

When you take a subject as colorful and action packed as skateboarding, have the production budget and talent like Ray Barbee and friends, and the vision to hire a passionate production company deeply steeped in the very same juices, what you get is some brilliant creative effort and a top class marketing production.  Leica has done it again, LET US ROAM: Ray Barbee is every bit up to the ultra high quality standards the Leica brand stands for.  A truly class act, from a truly class team all the way around.

Barbee’s passion for music and photography was made accessible through skateboarding. Ray’s short film illustrates his passion for creativity and the importance of passing those values on to his children.  Bravo to Leica for backing the telling of his story.  Bravo to Helio for telling it in a most excellent way.  You dudes ROCK!  And Ray, well dude, you Sir are an inspiration to us all.
