Gary Vaynerchuk: Own Your Thing

How To Get Off Your Ass & Get Your Stuff Noticed

with Gary Vaynerchuk & Chase Jarvis

Chase Jarvis welcomes author and social media marketer Gary Vaynerchuk to his Seattle studio to discuss how to stand out in a noisy social world.  Gary’s books are always a treat to read, but even better are his public appearances.  Gary Vaynerchuk gets it, and gets it at the gut level.  The ultimate gorilla marketer, taking the story to the people while keeping it real.

Gary Vaynerchuk (born November 14, 1975, in Babruysk, U.S.S.R. [now Belarus]) is co-founder and CEO of a social media brand consulting agency; a video blogger; the co-owner and director of operations of a wine retail store; and an author and public speaker on the subjects of social media, brand building and e-commerce.  Gary Vaynerchuk immigrated to the U.S. in 1978, and moved with his family to Edison, New Jersey.  After graduating from Mount Ida College in Newton, MA, he transformed his father’s small Springfield Township, Union County, New Jersey liquor store into a huge retail wine store named Wine Library, and in 2006 started the video blog Wine Library TV, a daily internet webcast on the subject of wine.  Gary Vaynerchuk not only talks the talk, he has walked the walk.

In his book “Crush It” Gary Vaynerchuk encourages people to determine what truly makes them happy and pursue monetizing around it on the internet. It argues that because of recent social and technological trends the cost of producing content has been driven low enough that passion, knowledge, and effort, which the book calls “sweat equity”, are now all one needs to build a brand and business.  From my own past experience, I think he is probably correct.

For working photographers, be it a steady stream of ten hour, five days a week, or simply the occasional weekend warrior shoot; one of the largest problems we face is getting the word of our services around to potential clients.  Social media is no longer just an option, it is a requirement to do that effectively.  Where once a Yellow Pages ad would suffice, many today don’t even remember what the Yellow Pages was.  Think “Google search” before Google was invented, in alphabetic book form, three inches thick here in LA.

Few people I have run across are as astute at “getting the word out” using search and social media as Gary Vaynerchuk.  Few also as successful.  Gary Vaynerchuk has made millions of dollars, and continues to do so each year.  I found this entire hour and a half well worth my time watching.  I trust you in my audience will as well, but even if you only watch the first couple of minutes, I know you will find Gary’s words and message of value just as I did.
