Sony A7S Video Review

Sony A7S Video Review

Video review of the Sony A7S from Philip Bloom Reviews & Tutorials on Vimeo.

Few people in the small camera video production industry are as widely respected as Philip Bloom.  A photojournalist by former trade, Bloom has evolved his brand and his style to encompass filmmaking as his primary art form. His work is distinctive, and always beautiful. Philip has a great sense of esthetic.  When it comes to his video camera reviews, I always find his to be some of the most valuable.  Philip is very picky about having the right settings, knowing where and how to get at them quickly to change them when required, and cameras getting out of the way so that the magic of the glass is perfectly captured. Philip’s insights are always a delight. This latest hands on evaluation does not disappoint.  Another masterpiece review from one of the modern day masters.

According to Philip:

“There is a very small amount of flesh on display here, not mine. Just a bit of painted topless ladies who pose for photos in New York. Might be not safe for work…captured as part of the street filming scenes.”

“Any use of the Vimeo tip jar is greatly appreciated as it helps go towards subsidizing and future reviews. Without which they would be financially unworkable. Huge thanks to anyone who does donate and to CVP who partly subsidised this one to get it going! Added up to around a month of work that was put into this review, which is hard to do when I need to earn money doing my proper paid filming! These are done for the filmmaking community.”

“As always with my reviews I take my time to create the content which in turn helps me form my opinion rather than just shoot some footage then put a review out based upon a snap judgment. Pointless. You need time with a camera and time to truly form an opinion worth sharing. Whether you should listen to this opinion? Sure! Why not? Just don’t buy anything based on it, not on any one opinion… especially mine! Check out other reviews and try before you buy if you can!”

“This review is for the world camera, which is basically most of them. The US one does not appear to be PAL/ NTSC switchable which is a bit rubbish!!! When buying the camera please make sure you check!!  Mostly shot on the A7s apart from a few BTS shots in Central Park, New York and a a few GH4 BTS and Gopro shots during the 4K testing.”

“Filmed in Brighton, RIchmond, Maidstone, New York, Detroit  Main on camera section lit with an Area 48 LED Soft with interchangeable phosphor panels. A truly beautiful light! http://www.bbslighting.com/products/area-48-soft-remote-phosphor.”

“Lens used on this section was a Sigma 50mm F1.4. All shot HD yet was able to punch in to about 130% for frame changes. The image is that detailed you can get away with it.”

“Do check out the main “No longer evolving review” blog post here gopb.co/a7s for downloads and more clips.”

“Music courtesy of The Music Bed. Gopb.co/musicbed All tracks listed chronologically in the end credits.”

“Graded with FilmConvert 10% of with code bloom at gopb.co/filmconvert
also with James Miller’s Custom LUTS which are coming soon!”
