For several years now the demise of the still photograph has been foretold.  It is said that with video having progressed to the stage that it has already, there is little need anymore for a camera that shoots stills.  I beg to differ.  It is fine for me to purchase a camera that has a hybrid capability, in that it is capable of recording both still photographs and video.  But to have a camera to only shoot video, I feel the lack and always carry a second camera for stills.

With the advent of software post processing tools like FotoMagico 4 from Boinx, After Effects from Adobe, AutoDesk’s Smoke, in addition to excellent software offerings from Apple and Avid, there are numerous software options today to make still images move.  Add in special processing tools like Iridient Developer and Uwe Steinmueller’s excellent Photoshop actions and these options offer up exciting creative ways defying my imagination with what I can do.  No video will ever have the seat riveting power some still photographs convey, but combined with the best of video elements animating my stills opens up whole new worlds of creative ideas.

Podunk Poets is one such projec, deliberately shot with stills only, no video, with my Canon 5D Mark III equipped with my old 28-80 USM lens.  Post processing was all done in Adobe After Effects.
