Blue Moon
Blue Moon, Blue Maine from Jon Roemer on Vimeo.
As we look at options to add video capabilities beyond what mirrorless cameras or DSLRs are capable of producing while maintaining our wish to leverage our investment in expensive lenses, the choices become somewhat limited. One of the recent top-of-the-hill contenders priced between a DSLR and a full on RED is the Canon C300. At $15,000 the C300 isn’t inexpensive, but it also isn’t the $40,000 a fully outfitted RED will set you back. Old friend and fellow Photographer/Videographer Jon Roemer has chosen the C300 with great results, as you will see in this short he produced shown above.
Jon invested two weeks filming in Deer Isle, Stonington, and Blue Hill, ME; with stops at the Blue Hill Fair and a Stonington Flash in the Pans street dance, culminating in the blue moon on August 31/Sept 1. Jon shot a Canon C300 with a mix of lenses: 24-105, 70-200, 16-35, and 50/1.2. Tripod, monopod, and handheld were all used. ISOs 850 – 20,000. Shot in c-log, edited and graded in FCP X. You can download and view in 1080P to get a sense of C300 file quality if you want from Vimeo(better than Vimeo’s codec but still not as good as the original, 20,000 kbits/sec file.)
