Letterpress: The Gentlemen’s Press
Michelle Yu, The Gentlemen’s Press from anotherbeautifulstory on Vimeo.
Self described on Etsy as “The Gentlemen are an alliance formed by tired and unhappy men in funny hats. It was formed mainly to facilitate weekly seances and relentless left-wing debates on the impending zombie apocalypse.” {Michelle Yu – The Gentlemen’s Press}
Young, impulsive, and stupid – these are also words Michelle Yu uses to describe how her heart lead her to letterpress as a profession, though by now we are sure she understands how fortunate she is to be following her hearts desires in what is basically a logic driven world. While we could talk about what ‘letterpress’ is, (“a technique of relief printing using a printing press” says Wikipedia), the question we thought interesting to ask instead is “What is it like for a young creative, straight out of design school to steer left, not following her peers into University, and instead choosing to follow her heart into a craft that her heart calls out for?”
The Gentlemen’s Press is another story based in Singapore, another glimpse into the cultural values of a letterpress artist with an amazing story to tell. Well executed, the character and determination of Ms. Yu are as remarkable as is her intense focus on her goal to keep the letterpress craftsmanship to the highest of levels and to “accent” the fortunate mistakes inherent to the letterpress printing process itself.
