FS5 vs a7S II

I’m shooting so much low light video these days that I was very interested to see what the new Sony FS5 was capable of, verses the new Sony a7S II.  It is possible I will be using one or the other of these cameras in 2016, and I need to make a client recommendation.  I want to thank Dan Chung from newsshooter.com for taking the time and trouble of doing this video and making it available for this article.  Dan saves me a lot of testing work, as it is clear the a7S II is still the reigning champion of the high ISO “Available Darkness” world that I work in.

For the Sony FS5 vs a7S II: A Low Light Comparison test video both cameras were set to record 4K XAVC internally to the SD card at 100Mbps in 8-bit 4:2:0 colour. The white balance was manually set to the same kelvin value on both cameras and matching Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 zoom lenses were used with frame sizes matched by adjusting the zoom (the 18-35mm was set at 35mm on the a7S so that it would cover the full-frame sensor). Matching Rec.709 cine gamma settings were used on both cameras. In theory the setups were as near identical as they could be, although in practice the images looked quite different.
