Setting Up The Panasonic GH4 For Videographers

How many times have you bought a new camera, only to feel like a total idiot within ten minutes of opening the box?  Happens to me almost every time. I get what a camera is supposed to do: take pictures. I understand the feature set I bought my camera for, or at least I should if I bought it.  My problem is bridging the gap between “high hopes and beautiful dreams” to the reality of “competent operator” as quickly as possible.  Hopefully, if I do that successfully I get to keep at least the “beautiful dreams” part. The reality is

Panasonic GH4 Stills: Camera Impressions

GH4 Stills?  That is just a video camera, right?  Nope.  The Panasonic GH4 is out and shipping, so our favorite reviewers at TheCameraStore.TV in Calgary, Alberta, Canada decided to revisit the GH4 with a full production unit to check out some of the things they were unable to test in the prototype they used in their earlier “first look.”  In this after dark episode, Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake look at the GH4 stills quality, external recording, Wifi functions and more!.   But the biggest additions?  They discover the new Panasonic actually does shoot 16 megapixel stills, quality GH4 stills, with reportedly excellent autofocus

Using Iridient Developer With Lightroom

It looks like Brian Griffith has updated my favorite RAW converter, Iridient Developer, to work almost seamlessly now with Lightroom. This is fantastic news! Dublin fine art photographer and Lightroom presets developer Thomas Fitzgerald has done a very informative video above that walks you through how to setup both Adobe Lightroom and Iridient Developer. Being able to use Iridient Developer with Lightroom should not take you more than just a few minutes to setup and then your all set for some of the smoothest, highest quality RAW conversions I’ve ever seen. For those of you not inclined to watch a movie, but

Introducing Sony’s New Pocket-Sized RX100 III

Hot on the heals of the announcement of the Sony Alpha A7S pricing comes what could easily become the star of the Sony show.  Scheduled to ship in June, the new Sony pocket-sized RX100 III is the latest evolution in the venerable line of Sony pocket cameras, and boy is it a serious contender in its category. I love my full-frame A7R, but for the past six months I’ve been on a camera hunt for a perfect pocket companion set of cameras to pair with it. I’ve become a vocal proponent for the “Tell Me Three Times” video school.  We like to

GH4, X-T1, A6000, E-M1: Autofocus Shootout!

Everybody loves a good autofocus shootout. But this autofocus shootout not to be missed!  Once again, The Camera Store’s Chris Niccolls steps in front of Jordan Drake’s Sony FS700 to bring you the latest information and his opinion about the autofocus speed and accuracy in the current crop of leading mirrorless cameras. To balance things out a bit, he also shoots a Nikon D4S, widely known as one of the very best autofocus cameras made for action sports. Surprisingly, this autofocus shootout shows the mirrorless cameras have improved so much over just the past eighteen months, they now become serious challengers to

DxO Optics Pro 9.5 And Lightroom

Finally, the Fat Lady is warming up her voice.  I’ve felt for some time that there were better RAW conversion options on the market than Adobe Camera Raw, which is natively supported by Lightroom.  DxO Optics Pro is one of those.  However, the round trip out and back into Lightroom to edit in an external editor required you to first render the RAW file into either a TIFF or a JPG, both of which defeat the purpose of using an external RAW processor in the first place as this can reduce image quality.  Bummer.   Workarounds are possible, but quite cumbersome.

Rodents On Turntables

Rodents on Turntables – @LiveNation from Division of Labor on Vimeo. Sometimes I come across things that are so outrageous I just can’t help myself but laugh.  Not everything in life needs to be about cameras.  Nor does life have to be always so dang serious.  As we get older, we think we forget a lot of things.  One of the things we fail to remember is that to be young, one must think young.  You are only as old as you think you are.  So act your age today, your real age you know is still there inside you. That little

A7R vs 5D Mark III vs Zoom Q4

Pass That Bottle To Me from TheCameraForum on Vimeo. I know, at first it might seem a bit far fetched to do a head to head comparison between three such widely different cameras, the A7R vs 5D Mark III vs Zoom Q4, all at opposite ends of the price spectrum.  However, when it comes to music video production these days, anything goes.  So to get different takes and different “looks,” I chose to go with three cameras I knew in advance I could color grade and intercut the footage. The three cameras I used in this production were the venerable Canon 5D

Sony RX10: Best Entry Level Camera For Video Hybrid Storytelling?

I’ve been watching with keen interest the latest round of reviews on what is the best entry level camera for video.  I’ve recently discovered the infinite joy in the editing suite of having multiple camera perspectives of the same subject, but also discovered how difficult the grading task becomes trying to intercut footage.  Using the same make and model camera, and identical settings, prevents this problem as all of the footage will be consistent for grading purposes.  For me, the question then becomes which are the best low cost options for hybrid storytellers such as myself?  The Sony RX10 keeps

Sony A7S Price: The Cat Or The Bag?

The Sony A7S price is $2,495 and will ship beginning the first week in July, so you could say this new low light “Cat” that can focus in the dark is almost out of the bag.  You read that correctly, the Sony guy or gal in charge of setting prices, in their infinite wisdom, has decided to price this new Sony 12MP still camera at $200 OVER their 36MP award winning A7R’s retail price.  Can you visualize the Product Manager for the Panasonic GH4 doing cartwheels?  He has got to be a happy fellow going into the weekend.  His order build rate just

Sony RX10 Hybrid Production

German Places: Ruegen 2014 from Bettina + Uwe Steinmueller on Vimeo. We hoped the Sony RX10 will help with our production of mini documentaries. The idea is the show places from our personal subjective view in short video clips and still images. It is easy to see that we are stills photographers even if we take videos. Still a lot of fun.
